Water Research Centre reports
WRC (water research centre) reports are required by the water authority when building over or within three metres of a public sewer. Two reports are generally required to show the pipe condition, one before building work commences, followed by a second after the building work has been completed.
That way if any damage has occurred to the pipework you will know and the water authority will require this to be repaired. A full diagnostic report is supplied as per WRC requirements. Once he knew what the problem was he told me to call Severn Trent (because it was a shared drain) although he could have charged me and I would have paid to resolve the problem.
